Edmund Chummery (also known as Chum Chum) is one of the two titular main protagonists (alongside Fanboy) of the series, Fanboy & Chum Chum. He's Fanboy's best friend and sidekick. Although he is younger than the other main characters, he is still in the same class as them. Show creator Eric Robles explained on the Nickelodeon message board that this is because Fanboy snuck him into his class and the teacher never noticed the age difference.

Background

Family

He has two known cousins. One of his cousins is a Chulk. His female cousin is Muk Muk. He has an uncle named "Chuncle" Joe who is also a Chulk. He has an unnamed grandfather who like his unnamed cousin and "Chuncle" Joe is also a Chulk. He also has a grandmother whom he refers to as "nana". It is implied his grandmother cared about him as when he was younger he got chicken poxes and he received comic books from her.

Early Life

His family comes from a tribe of orange giants known as Chulks from the country of Chulkistan. At some unknown time he moved to Galaxy Hills. Chum Chum first met Fanboy in preschool when both were toddlers. Due to his innocent curiosity, Chum Chum poked Fanboy's eye when first meeting.

Current Life

At an unknown time he and Fanboy turned an abandoned water tower into their home dubbed as the Fanlair. Chum Chum currently lives and has lots of fun as a roommate with Fanboy.

School

He attends the 5th grade at Galaxy Hills Elementary School. While at school, many of the classes he does are Math, History, Art, Reading, French, Gym, Woodshop, and Social Studies. He has the second most stars earned in his class only being behind Kyle.

Chum Chum often witnesses his teacher - Mr. Mufflin - disrespect and yell at him. He is friends with most of his classmates. The only known classmates that are sometimes rude to him are Kyle, Francine and Duke. However, unlike the former, Duke and Francine aren’t nearly as mean.

Personality

He is depicted as sweet, kind and childlike. He is very optimistic and believes in the good of certain things. Because of his innocent nature and small size, some characters are charmed by him most notably Yo.

He finds joy in the simplest of things such as getting excited about a bounce house in "I, Fanbot" or a plastic bubble in "Fanboy in the Plastic Bubble".

Chum Chum is very nice and innocent, and very rarely acts openly mean-spirited to anyone, even to those who find him an annoyance and act cruelly to him. He is a very selfless person, especially toward those close to him. His selfless nature is most notably shown in "The Tell-Tale Toy" as he accepts Fanboy for who he is despite his history of breaking his toys. He is also loyal and will always stand up for Fanboy or his other friends no matter what.

In comparison to Fanboy, Chum Chum is usually the more nice, mellow and "less intense" of the two, though he still acts quite energetic.

Chum Chum is shown to be rather intelligent for his age and points out the stronger concept than what Fanboy often says. In "Precious Pig" he points out why Fanboy teaching animals tricks may not be a good idea due to Fanboy often unintentionally harming animals in the past. In "A Bopwork Orange" he understands the mechanics of "negative reinforcement" of Boog’s shock collar, he wires a colander with "sensors" to Boog's head and successfully integrates Dollarnator to monitor Boog’s perspiration, pupil dilation, and core temperature. In "Attack of the Clones" he builds a functional Cloning Ray, understands the laws of physics, biology, the density of materials and their ability to withstand external force, and the risks of "cloning clones".

Chum Chum is also shown to be rather mature. He usually stays calm during difficult situations, understands the feelings of others, shows respect for others, even those with different opinions and doesn’t hold grudges. An example of his maturity is in "Brain Drain" where he doesn't panic when Fanboy loses his brain as he immediately goes to the fridge for the "Emergency Brain". Chum Chum attempts to use the sponge by having it absorb all the information Fanboy is learning while using teaching methods (which begins working).

He can be very focused and attentive when he needs to be. In "Fan-bidextrous" he is able to stay still and quiet while taking a pop quiz and doesn’t get distracted by the noise going in around him.

He has the ability to stay regulated to match his energy to the situation, whether it’s playing or taking care of a class pet.

Despite being the smarter one of the two, he can be very gullible, forgetful and foolish at times. In "Trading Day" he believes Fanboy's lie about going to space. Though usually his naivety comes from being softhearted and pure.

He is shown to be rather sensitive and dislikes when others make fun of him or his friends. In "The Incredible Chulk" after Chum Chum stands up to Boog, he gets threatened causing him to whimper.

He has a bit of a soft side as he acts innocent and tenderhearted, loves things like ponies, flowers, sparkles, rubber duckies and teddy bears, and wears bright colors. However he also has a boyish side such as playing in the mud and loves action figures, comics and sports.

Chum Chum is quite creative in his problem solving. In "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha" he spends most his time at the kindergarten by making an airplane out of ice cream sticks in order to save Fanboy from Marsha.

He is shown to love and care deeply about animals as shown in "Digital Pet Cemetery" and "Precious Pig".

He shown to be very forgiving such as whenever Yo tries to kidnap him or when Fanboy accidentally broke his toys when younger, Chum Chum doesn’t hold a grudge and still enjoys hanging out with them.

Despite being very nice and caring, sometimes he acts a bit rude and self-centered. In "Battle of the Stands" he and Fanboy trick people with cuteness in order to get money. Another example is in "Boog Zapper" when he breaks Oz’s touch screen and menacingly tells him to leave.

Even though he is generally good-natured and easygoing, at times Chum Chum can have meltdowns when something doesn’t go right. In "Battle of the Stands" he gets upset at the fact that no customers are buying lemonade from his and Fanboy’s lemonade stand.

He is sometimes helpless in danger and usually needs Fanboy or another character to save him. An example of this is in "Saving Private Chum Chum" when his teacher, Mr. Mufflin mistakes him for a toy and gets locked in a drawer. Despite often being vulnerable in "Brain Freeze" he and Fanboy manage to save day by defeating an ice monster with super powers.

He is shown to be able to have no problem with handling 5th grade despite being younger. In "Norse-ing Around" he surpasses all of his classmates as he has 5 gold stars and only being behind Kyle who has 6. He also doesn’t get confused when seeing 5th grade problems or Mr. Muffin talks about them.

Even though some of the citizens often treat him poorly, he usually doesn’t let their selfishness make him miserable and is able to remain positive.

He occasionally playfully teases others most notably Boog and sometimes Hank. Examples of this include "Chimp Chomp Chumps", "Fanboy in the Plastic Bubble", "Separation Anxiety", "A Bopwork Orange", "Champ of Chomp" and "Funny Face".

Earlier episodes showed him not being too experienced with technology as evidence in "Digital Pet Cemetery" where Chum Chum thinks Yo has a "cat egg" and many episodes showing him only getting 3 points at Chimp Chump. In "Hex Games" he is more advanced with playing video games as he’s able to remember complex commands.

As a toddler he retains most of his personality he has as an older kid though he is a bit more naive as seen. In "Fan vs. Wild" during the scene where he meets Fanboy he unintentionally pokes Fanboy’s eye. In "Back From The Future" he and Fanboy try to find the library to learn how to read and at one point mistakes Dollarnator as a mailbox. In "Buddy Up" during the flashback he wanders off causing him to be at risk at getting injured. Despite this, as a toddler he is very smart at that age as he quickly notices certain things, asks for help when he’s trying to find something, is able to talk in full sentences, use slightly complex vocabulary, understands what funerals are about, the consequences of being mean and is able to fight a full grown bear.

Appearance

Chum Chum is short and stout, with peach skin. Like Fanboy, he has a blush on his cheeks, but a little paler. He has chocolate brown somewhat messy hair with bangs swoop to the left. There are two parts at the top right, that curl away from each other. He has a spiked on top of his hair near the left. His right front tooth in his upper jaw is slightly larger than the left.

He has a large, round, wide oval head, slightly big round circular ears and round large eyes. His hands and feet are quite small. He has black eyes. He has a small button-like apricot nose. His lips are thin. He has stubby arms and legs.

Like Fanboy, he has his own set of trademark clothes. He usually wears an orange shirt with short yellow shelves and a white circle with his emblem near the center on the chest. On the bottom, he wears a pair of white-and-yellow integrated tights. He wears black goggles with bumps on the bottom of each eye, short black gloves to match, and a short, yellow cape. On his feet, he wears a pair of black low-top sneakers with a white sole.
